This painting was commissioned by Compton & Woodhouse, the ceramics company, and was to be the first in a series of collector plates depicting Celtic Goddesses and heroines. Unfortunately the series did not get the go ahead but I really enjoyed producing this painting for I love Celtic art and history.
The painting shows FIONUALA, daughter of King Lir, who with her three brothers was turned into a swan by their evil step-mother. I have depitcted the frightening moment when they are turned into swans and Fionuala’s concern and care for her brothers. Unfortunately the story does not have a happy ending for they remained as swans for 900 years and when the spell was finally broken they died.
