It is said that the nightingale will only return to the countryside after its Winter migration when the Lily of the Valley blooms because the bird so loves this beautiful flower. Hence the ‘Language of Flowers’ meaning of ‘Return of Happiness’.
Also shown in this painting are Almond Blossom which mean ‘hope’ and the Yellow pimpernel which means ‘assignation’. The Spring assignation of the nightingale with the lily of the valley perhaps?
